Operation Hay/ Shavings Bank

Forage is the base of what keeps the rescue and the animals in our care alive. Without quality hay we can not rehab donkeys and mules successfully and with a clean conscience. Forage is the most important part of any equine's diet and therefore is why we do not skimp on the cost of finding good quality hay. The old saying ‘You get what you pay for’ definitely comes into play here. We don’t want to cut corners, the animals we take in have been through so much already, the very least we can do for them is give them quality first cut hay and a thick bed of shavings when they first walk off the trailer to start their new life at SYA.

This year has been a tough one in many ways, but the most concerning to us is how much rain we've had this year, and all the flooding we've had that has attributed to difficulty in getting hay due to road closures and fields being flooded. We have found a wonderful local hay supplier who is delivering hay and shavings to us as needed. Due to all of the closed roads in our area we need to stock up on hay before winter, which means filling our barns. The flooding we had this July was a giant wake up call. There was no way in or out of the rescue for at least a week. Only thanks to our neighbor, Steve who fixed Saw Mill Road, were we able to get our vehicles to the rescue. Before this we were either driving an hour and a half of back roads to get to the rescue, or I would park as close to the rescue as possible and hoof it over the river and through the woods to get to SYA on foot. This was of course scary and anxiety inducing and made us realize we need to keep a more signifigant hay and shavings stash on hand.

We need to raise $5,000 to be able to stock up on hay and to have enough funds to feed everyone this winter. A very generous supporter has stepped up to do a matching fund for us of $1,000! This is enough for two deliveries of hay, if we raise this much and it's doubled we will have a wonderful head start on our hay and shavings supply for the winter months ahead! Would you consider making a donation today to help feed the hungry donkeys and mules in our care this winter?

Thank you for all your support and for being the reason the donkeys and mules will have full bellies this winter!

With Gratitude,

Hannah Allen and the SYA Team
